Historic Swedesboro-Woolwich Township is home to a significant collection of historical sites & artifacts. It was established back in the mid-1600's by Swedish Settlers, but did not really flourish until 1691, when Kings Highway was carved out. The establishment of Kings Highway gave much needed access to the fertile farmland & natural resources of Southern Gloucester County. The Swedesboro Area has a wealth of historical significance; it is home to one of the oldest log cabins in the country. The Nothnagle Log Cabin was built by Anthony Nielson & is in the National Historic Registry. It is located on Swedesboro-Paulsboro Road in Gibbstown & is still privately owned.

The log cabin was originally built in 1638, by Swedish Settlers who migrated from Pennsylvania & Delaware. It is still privately owned & is available for tours, by appointment only. The original cabin was 16' X 22', & was considered to be rather large in its day. The cabin is built of oak logs that were dovetailed. There were no nails used in the construction of the cabin, only wood pegs. An addition to the cabin was built in the early 1800's & several families occupied the property, up unti

l 1918. The Nothnagle Cabin is in The National Registry of Historic Places. It is the official list of noteworthy historical buildings in the United States. The Registry's main focus is to identify & aid in the preservation of historic treasures. The Swedesboro-Woolwich Historical Society, in conjunction with the National Registry, sponsors educational & cultural events, with the objective of preserving local historical artifacts & buildings in their regional district.

The Historical Society also raises money & awareness, in order to support their significant endeavors, through donations & a compelling selection of historical items & souvenirs. A few of my favorite items are the Collection of Civil War Letters of General Louis Henry Carpenter, "The Gettysburg Campaign" & also "Images of America", a collection of historical photos of Swedesboro & Woolwich Townships. If you are interested in donating to the Historical Society or in purchasing one of these prized historical items, you can call: 856.203.4045 or email to: swewoolhistsoc@yahoo.com . Also, check out their website at: www.historicswedesboro.com for their calendar of monthly events & seminars.
